Why is Tooth Extraction Done?

Although tooth extraction is a routine dental procedure, we only perform it when it is recommended. Our primary purpose is to preserve your teeth and dental health, and as such we usually do other treatments first before we opt to remove your time. There are times when tooth extraction in El Dorado Hills and they include:

  • Wisdom teeth extraction

Because the wisdom teeth are the last to come out, the chances of them getting impacted underneath the gums are high. These molars come out after the jaws have attained maturity and they either partially come out or get fully impacted. This causes pain, swelling and cause the teeth to weaken. Our dentist in El Dorado Hill will perform a tooth extraction to remove the impacted teeth.

  • Severe tooth decay

Dental decay develops in stages and the initial stages, the dentist will use dental fillings. If the decay spreads to the inner parts of the teeth, then a root canal is done to stop the spread of the infection. However, when you have extensive decay, the dentist will do a tooth extraction to protect the rest of the teeth.

  • Overcrowding

Overcrowded teeth affect teeth alignment and also dental health. The dentist can remove the excess teeth in preparation for the teeth alignment treatment.

Our dentist in 95762 may also recommend tooth extraction if the primary teeth fail to come out on time.

How Can You Prepare for Teeth Extraction?

Before the dentist schedules you for tooth extraction, he will take an x-ray of your teeth and gums. He will also do a comprehensive medical and drug history, so be sure to inform them of the vitamins and supplements you are taking.

Also, inform the dentist if you have any pre-existing medical conditions such as; diabetes, liver disease, hypertension, renal disease, or adrenal disease.

The dentist may prescribe antibiotics a few days before the procedure especially if you have an infection or weakened immune system.

IV dental sedation may be used for the procedure, and as such, you need to prepare by wearing the proper outfit. You also need to avoid eating or drinking six to eight hours before your tooth extraction procedure. And, do not smoke before or after the extraction procedure as it may impair gum healing.

How is the Tooth Extraction Procedure Done?

The tooth extraction is either simple and surgical, depending on where the teeth are located.

  • Simple extractions

Simple extractions are done on visible teeth. The dentist will numb the gums and the area around the teeth to reduce discomfort. You may feel a little pressure as the teeth are pulled. The dentist will use an elevator to loosen the teeth and pull them with forceps.

  • Surgical extraction

A surgical extraction is done on impacted teeth that lie beneath the gums. Local anesthesia and dental sedation are used to reduce pain and relax you. The dentist will cut the gums to access the jaw. The bone around the teeth is removed and the teeth are cut into small pieces before they are extracted.

What Are the Risks Involved in Teeth Extraction?

Tooth extraction is safe, but there are a few risks that may develop from the procedure. A blood clot forms in the socket after the teeth are removed. The clot is vital to your healing process and it is important to protect it to prevent a dry socket.

A dry socket can cause pain, bad breath and can affect gum healing.

Other risks may include:

  • Bleeding
  • Severe chills and fever, which are signs of infection
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Cough
  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Swelling

Visit our dentist in El Dorado Hills immediately if you experience any of these symptoms.

How Long Does It Take to Recover from a Tooth Extraction?

It will take a few days for the gums to recover after a simple extraction. A surgical extraction may take longer because it takes time for the soft tissue to heal.

During the recovery period, you can do the following to make the recovery process go smoothly:

  • Use a cold compress to reduce swelling
  • Bite a gauze pad to control bleeding
  • Rest for the first 24 hours
  • Do not use a straw to drink beverages to avoid breaking the blood clot
